Corn

Corn trades across feed, food, starch, ethanol and other industrial channels, with physical value shaped by grade, colour or type, moisture, test weight, damage, toxins, origin and delivery terms. CBOT corn is a reference contract, not a universal delivered price.

Grain identity and intended use

Commodity corn should not be merged with sweet corn, seed corn or processed maize products. A physical record names yellow, white or other contractual type; grade; crop year; GMO or identity-preserved status where relevant; and intended feed, food or industrial use.

Quality factors drive comparability

USDA corn grades use factors such as test weight, damaged kernels, broken corn and foreign material. Commercial contracts may also set moisture, mycotoxin, odour, pesticide-residue, fumigation and food- or feed-safety requirements. Each limit needs its sampling and test basis.

Benchmark and delivery remain separate

CME defines CBOT corn in 5,000-bushel contracts quoted in cents per bushel. A physical offer requires origin, grade and differential, quantity, currency, Incoterm, load point or destination, delivery window, freight and dated evidence before a delivered value can be compared.

Questions procurement teams ask

Is CBOT corn a delivered physical corn price?

No. It is a reference-market contract. A delivered physical price additionally needs grade, origin, basis, Incoterm, destination, freight and delivery timing.

How large is one CBOT corn contract?

CME specifies 5,000 bushels, approximately 127 metric tons.

Which corn quality factors matter most?

Common controls include grade, test weight, moisture, damaged kernels, broken corn and foreign material, plus contractual toxin and safety limits.

Which fields make corn offers comparable?

Type and grade, crop year, GMO status where relevant, test weight, moisture, damage, toxins, quantity, currency, origin, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
