Fenugreek

Fenugreek is the dried ripe seed or fruit of Trigonella foenum-graecum, not the fresh leaves sold as methi, planting seed, oleoresin, extract or a blended seasoning. A comparable food-spice lot needs botanical identity, whole or ground form, crop and packing dates, size and colour class, moisture, total and acid-insoluble ash, extraneous matter, damaged, blackened, insect-bored, shrivelled and immature seed results, food-safety evidence, treatment, grade and jurisdiction, sample or certificate, origin, lot, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and information vintage.

The Spices Board of India's Quality Marking Regulations identify fenugreek seed as dried mature Trigonella foenum-graecum and list, for Special whole seed, maxima of 1.0 percent extraneous matter, 0.5 percent damaged, blackened and insect-bored seed, 1.5 percent shrivelled and immature seed, and 10 percent moisture. The same source gives ground fenugreek maxima of 10 percent moisture, 7 percent total ash and 2 percent acid-insoluble ash. Canada's current incorporated compositional standard defines whole or ground fenugreek as dried ripe Trigonella foenumgraecum fruit, with maxima of 5 percent total ash, 1 percent acid-insoluble ash and 10 percent moisture. These are source- and jurisdiction-specific requirements, not a certificate, current supply or price for an offered lot.

Fenugreek seed and fresh methi leaves are separate products

The Indian and Canadian sources identify the standardized spice as dried Trigonella foenum-graecum seed or fruit. Atlas keeps it separate from fresh or dried leaves, planting seed and other species or market names. Botanical identity, plant part, food or planting use and seller description remain separate fields; the word methi alone does not establish a comparable commodity.

Whole, ground, oleoresin and extract forms stay separate

Grinding changes particle size and makes substitution or admixture harder to detect; oleoresins and extracts are concentrated preparations with different specifications and uses. Atlas records incoming form, processing step, particle-size basis, additives, treatment and lot-linked evidence instead of transferring whole-seed grade factors to ground or extracted products.

Indian grade factors and Canadian composition limits are not interchangeable

The Indian Quality Mark table controls visible whole-seed factors such as extraneous matter, damaged or insect-bored seed and maturity, while the Canadian incorporated standard specifies ash and moisture for whole or ground fenugreek. Atlas records the authority, edition, grade, product form, sampling and test method, laboratory result, date and certificate. A published tolerance is not a measured lot result and cannot be moved between jurisdictions without evidence.

A grade or moisture limit does not establish a delivered fenugreek price

Standards cannot establish crop availability, actual lot quality, cleaning or grinding yield, package condition, certification, freight or destination cost. A delivered comparison still needs current permitted observations for the exact botanical identity, form, grade basis, origin, lot, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, freight and information vintage. Atlas withholds a physical estimate when those observations or usage rights are missing.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are fenugreek seed and methi leaves the same trade product?

No. The standardized spice is the dried ripe seed or fruit. Fresh or dried leaves are a different plant part and need their own identity, condition and quality evidence.

Are whole and ground fenugreek interchangeable?

No. Grinding changes product form and particle-size, purity and handling evidence. Whole-seed defect limits cannot automatically certify ground material.

Does a Special grade limit prove the quality of a fenugreek lot?

No. The table defines tolerance criteria. The offered lot still needs applicable sampling, testing, an authorized grade claim and lot-linked documentation.

Which fields make fenugreek offers comparable?

Botanical identity, seed or leaf plant part, whole or ground form, food or planting use, crop and packing dates, size and colour class, moisture, ash, extraneous matter, damaged, blackened, insect-bored, shrivelled and immature seed results, food-safety evidence, treatment, grade and jurisdiction, sample or certificate, origin, lot, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
