Flax Fiber

Flax fiber is the bast fiber recovered from fibre-flax stems for textile and biobased uses—not flaxseed, linseed oil, oil-extraction meal, planting seed, spun yarn, finished linen or hemp fiber. A comparable physical lot needs botanical and cultivar identity, fibre-crop rather than oilseed purpose, harvest origin and date, straw condition, retting method and completion, scutching and hackling stage, long or short fiber, tow or waste status, bundle or bale form, length distribution, fineness, strength, color, cleanliness, shive and impurity content, moisture, treatment, sample and test method, certificate and lot, package and net weight, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, storage conditions and information vintage.

The figures below are dated European Commission cultivation observations and current market-notification parameters. They describe sector scale, crop timing and reporting scope; they do not establish a lot grade, certify fibre quality, prove current availability or provide a live delivered flax-fiber price.

Fibre flax and oilseed flax are different production lanes

The European Commission records flax as a crop grown for fiber and seed but describes fiber-flax harvesting and processing separately. HM Revenue & Customs likewise distinguishes flax varieties grown for spinning fiber from linseed grown mainly for oil and residual meal. Atlas keeps intended crop use, cultivar, stem or seed product, harvest method and processing stage explicit; a flaxseed observation cannot be promoted into flax-fiber supply, quality or price evidence.

Retting, scutching and hackling are distinct evidence stages

European Commission guidance describes pulled stems laid in field windrows for retting, followed by mechanical scutching that separates long fibers, short fibers, seeds, shives, flakes and dust. Long fibers may then be combed before spinning. Atlas records the actual retting method and duration, scutching and hackling status, long or short fiber, tow and waste separately because each stage changes identity, cleanliness, alignment and commercial comparability.

Cultivated area is context, not available fiber tonnage

The Commission reports that EU fibre-flax cultivation expanded from 80,000 hectares in 2014 to 182,000 hectares in 2024 and describes an approximately 100-day vegetation period. Its current notification rules require relevant Member States to report planted area, long-fiber production and weighted ex-factory prices when long fiber is produced from more than 1,000 hectares. Atlas retains year, geography, threshold and reporting basis; hectares do not establish harvested straw, scutched yield, grade, inventory or a current offer.

A sector record is not a delivered physical price

Cultivation statistics, crop timing and classification boundaries do not establish lot quality, availability or price. A delivered flax-fiber estimate still requires a defined long or short fiber and process stage, current permitted physical observations, origin and harvest, retting and scutching evidence, length, fineness, strength, color, shive, impurity and moisture results, lot quantity and bale specification, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, freight, storage conditions and information vintage. Atlas withholds a physical estimate when those observations or usage rights are missing.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are flax fiber and flaxseed the same traded product?

No. Fiber flax is cultivated and processed for bast fiber from stems, while linseed or flaxseed is traded as seed and may be crushed for oil and meal. The crop purpose, harvested part and processing evidence must remain separate.

What is the difference between retting and scutching?

Retting loosens pectin binding fiber to the woody stem, while scutching mechanically breaks and separates retted stem material into long fiber, short fiber and other fractions. Neither term alone establishes the final lot grade.

Does the 182,000-hectare EU figure represent fiber available for sale?

No. It is a dated 2024 cultivated-area observation. Saleable tonnage still depends on harvest, retting, scutching, yield, quality, inventory and the exact product form.

Which fields make physical flax-fiber offers comparable?

Botanical and cultivar identity, fiber-crop purpose, origin and harvest, straw and retting condition, scutching and hackling stage, long or short fiber, tow status, length, fineness, strength, color, shive, impurities, moisture, treatment, sample and method, certificate, lot, bale and net weight, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, storage and evidence date.
