Flaxseed

Flaxseed trade begins with commodity stage, intended use and inspection basis—not a generic flax label. Whole flaxseed for crushing, food, feed or planting, linseed oil, meal or cake and flax fiber are separate products and are not automatically comparable. A usable seed offer identifies intended use, variety or type where declared, crop year, grade and official inspection basis, test weight, heat-damaged and total damaged kernels, dockage, moisture and condition, objectionable or toxic material, oil or composition tests where contracted, treatment and germination for planting seed, origin, lot, package or bulk basis, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and information vintage.

The figures below combine USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates for the 2025 United States flaxseed crop, published in January 2026, with current official U.S. flaxseed grade limits maintained by USDA Agricultural Marketing Service. The crop figures are dated national measures and the grade figures are lot-assessment rules; neither is a current physical offer or a live delivered price.

Seed, oil, meal, fiber and planting stock are separate products

Whole flaxseed may be traded for crushing, food, feed or planting, while linseed oil, meal or cake and flax fiber add different processing, composition, handling and quality requirements. Planting seed additionally requires variety, purity, germination and treatment evidence. Atlas keeps commodity stage and intended use attached before comparing production, grade, composition, price or trade records.

Official grades retain factor results and dockage

USDA's grain grading handbook divides flaxseed into U.S. No. 1, U.S. No. 2 and U.S. Sample Grade, with no classes, subclasses or special grades. U.S. No. 1 requires at least 49 pounds per bushel and permits no more than 0.2 percent heat-damaged kernels and 10 percent total damaged kernels. U.S. No. 2 uses 47 pounds, 0.5 percent and 15 percent respectively. Dockage is determined and reported separately, so a grade label does not replace the underlying factor and condition results.

The 2025 U.S. crop expanded but remains a dated national measure

USDA NASS estimated 248,000 United States flaxseed acres planted and 234,000 harvested in 2025. Average yield was 22.2 bushels per acre and production was 5.202 million bushels. North Dakota accounted for 165,000 harvested acres and 3.960 million bushels. Those dated aggregates do not define a current lot's grade, dockage, moisture, damage, oil content, origin basis, destination or delivery terms.

Crop statistics and grade standards are not a delivered physical price

A current delivered flaxseed price requires a defined product stage and intended use, crop and grade, inspection and composition results, lot quantity, package or bulk basis, currency, Incoterm, origin, destination, delivery window, freight and information vintage. Atlas keeps futures or other reference signals separate and withholds a physical-price output when permitted current lot and route evidence is missing.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are flaxseed, linseed oil and flax fiber interchangeable?

No. Whole seed, oil, meal or cake and fiber are different commodity stages with different units, processing evidence, quality factors and end uses.

What are the main U.S. No. 1 flaxseed grade limits?

USDA's current handbook lists a 49-pound-per-bushel minimum test weight, a 0.2 percent heat-damaged-kernel maximum and a 10 percent total damaged-kernel maximum. Dockage and condition remain separately reported.

What does the 5.202 million bushel figure represent?

It is USDA NASS's estimate of United States flaxseed production for the 2025 crop year. It is a dated national crop measure, not current lot availability or a live physical price.

Which fields make physical flaxseed offers comparable?

Commodity stage, intended use, crop and variety, grade and inspection basis, test weight, heat and total damage, dockage, moisture and condition, objectionable material, contracted composition tests, treatment and germination where applicable, origin, lot, package or bulk basis, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
