Guarana

Guarana trade starts with Paullinia cupana identity and the product form. Whole dried seed or grain, stick, powder, beverage ingredient and concentrated extract are not interchangeable: processing changes composition, sampling, intended use, labelling and price basis. A comparable lot needs botanical identity and variety where claimed, plant part, grain, stick, powder or extract form, processing and extraction basis, caffeine or total methylxanthine method and result, tannins where applicable, moisture, impurities and defects, food or pharmacopoeial use, destination rules, package and lot, origin, crop and packing dates, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and information vintage.

Brazil's Conab, citing IBGE's Municipal Agricultural Production release, reported 2024 national guarana production at about 2.6 thousand metric tonnes, up 5.5 percent from 2023; Bahia represented 63.3 percent with about 1.6 thousand tonnes and Amazonas 29.0 percent with 771 tonnes. Brazil's 1982 commercial standard distinguishes guarana grain, stick and powder. Anvisa's Brazilian Pharmacopoeia monograph for guarana seed specifies minimums of 4.0 percent total tannins, 5.0 percent methylxanthines and 3.5 percent caffeine for the pharmacopoeial plant drug. These are dated production observations and form- or use-specific standards, not current lot results, exportable supply, a food specification for every destination or a live physical price.

Grain, stick, powder and extract are different guarana products

Brazil's Portaria 70/1982 defines guarana from Paullinia cupana and sets commercial identity, quality, packaging, storage and transport rules for grain, stick and powder. An extract adds another processing and concentration basis. Atlas records the plant part, incoming form, roasting or drying where declared, grinding or stick preparation, extraction solvent and ratio where relevant, carrier or additive, and intended use. A powder observation is not transferred to whole seed or extract without a documented conversion and matching specification.

Production totals describe a crop, not an available export lot

Conab's August 2025 analysis reports Brazil's 2024 production using IBGE data and identifies Bahia and Amazonas as the leading states. Those figures describe harvested agricultural output at a dated national and state level. They do not establish the quantity in a seller's warehouse, product form, usable yield, quality, caffeine content, certification, export eligibility or current offer. Atlas retains source, reference year, geography and revision vintage with every production observation.

Caffeine and methylxanthine claims need a method and use context

Anvisa's guarana-seed monograph is a pharmacopoeial standard for a defined plant drug, not a universal food-trade grade. Its minimum tannin, methylxanthine and caffeine values cannot be copied onto beverages, extracts or ordinary food lots without matching identity, preparation, jurisdiction, sampling and analytical evidence. Atlas retains the applicable standard, intended use, laboratory, method, sample and lot, dry or as-is basis, result, date and detection or quantification details rather than treating a published limit as a certificate.

A caffeine assay or crop total does not establish a delivered guarana price

Composition and production statistics cannot establish actual lot form, purity, moisture, defects, processing yield, package condition, destination compliance, current availability, freight or border cost. A delivered comparison still needs current permitted observations for the exact botanical and product identity, tested lot, composition basis, origin, package, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, route costs and information vintage. Atlas withholds a physical estimate when those observations or usage rights are missing.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are guarana seed, powder and extract interchangeable?

No. They differ in physical form, processing, concentration, composition basis, sampling, intended use and often destination requirements. Each needs its own lot specification and evidence.

Does Brazil's 2024 production total show how much guarana is available for export today?

No. It is a dated crop-output observation. Exportable availability still depends on stocks, product form, processing yield, quality, contracts, destination compliance and current seller evidence.

Does the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia minimum prove a food-grade guarana lot contains 3.5 percent caffeine?

No. The monograph applies to a defined pharmacopoeial guarana-seed drug. An actual food or ingredient lot needs its own applicable standard, sampling, method, certificate and destination assessment.

Which fields make guarana offers comparable?

Botanical identity and variety where claimed, plant part, grain, stick, powder or extract form, processing and extraction basis, carrier or additive, food or pharmacopoeial use, caffeine or methylxanthine method and result, tannins where applicable, moisture, impurities and defects, treatment, package and lot, origin, crop and packing dates, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
