Kiwi

Kiwifruit trade begins with species, cultivar, flesh type, maturity and intended use—not a generic kiwi label. Green-fleshed Actinidia deliciosa, gold or red Actinidia chinensis, hardy kiwi berries, fresh fruit and processing fruit can follow different grade, size, maturity and import requirements. Comparable offers require species and cultivar, flesh type, fresh or processing use, grade and inspection basis, count or size, soluble solids and maturity, firmness, defects, pack, origin, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and information vintage.

The figures below are USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates for California's 2025 kiwifruit crop, published in May 2026. They are dated domestic crop measures—not global trade totals, a current physical offer or a live delivered price; the annual average crop value is not presented as a current lot price.

Species, cultivar and flesh type come before comparison

Hayward and other Actinidia deliciosa fruit are generally green-fleshed, while Actinidia chinensis cultivars can have gold or red flesh. Hardy kiwi or kiwi berry is a separate small, smooth-skinned species group and may be handled outside the federal kiwifruit grade. Atlas keeps species, cultivar, flesh type, fresh or processing form and intended use explicit before comparing lots or evidence.

Maturity, size, firmness and condition travel with the lot

USDA AMS kiwifruit grades address similar varietal characteristics, maturity, form, cleanliness, packing and defects including decay, internal breakdown, freezing injury, bruising, discoloration, hail, growth cracks and scarring. U.S. import requirements also distinguish Actinidia chinensis size rules and require minimum soluble solids. A physical record preserves the exact standard, species, cultivar, count or size, soluble solids, maturity, firmness, defects, pack, inspection point, cold-chain history and arrival condition.

Crop totals do not determine a delivered kiwifruit price

USDA NASS estimated 40,400 short tons of utilized California kiwifruit production in 2025, all for the fresh market, from 5,200 bearing acres at an average yield of 7.8 tons per acre. The crop was valued at $113 million. These dated measures describe one domestic crop. A delivered price still requires the exact species, cultivar, flesh type, grade, maturity, size, pack, origin, destination, Incoterm, delivery window and current physical evidence.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are green, gold, red and hardy kiwifruit interchangeable?

No. Species and cultivar affect flesh type, size treatment, maturity, grade applicability, handling and market use. Hardy kiwi berries are a separate species group and USDA inspection instructions treat them as no-grade fruit.

What does the 40,400 short ton figure represent?

It is USDA NASS's estimate of utilized California kiwifruit production for the 2025 crop year. It is a dated domestic crop measure, not global production and not a current physical price.

What do U.S. kiwifruit import requirements cover?

Commercial shipments over 200 pounds generally must meet minimum grade, size and maturity requirements. USDA AMS identifies U.S. No. 1 as the minimum grade, species-specific count limits and 6.2 percent soluble solids at inspection, subject to stated exemptions.

Which fields make physical kiwifruit offers comparable?

Species, cultivar, flesh type, fresh or processed form, grade and inspection basis, count or size, soluble solids, maturity, firmness, defects and condition, treatment, packaging and net weight, cold-chain history, origin, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
