Rice

Rice procurement starts by separating rough, brown and milled rice, then specifying grain type, variety, grade, crop year, broken percentage, moisture, milling yield, defects and origin. A rough-rice futures reference cannot stand in for every milled export grade.

Product stage and grain type

Rough rice retains the hull, brown rice has the hull removed, and milled rice has further bran removal. Long-, medium- and short-grain classes and named varieties should remain explicit. Product stage changes yield, handling, use and price comparability.

Milling and quality evidence

A rice specification can include grade, broken-kernel percentage, chalkiness, red or damaged kernels, moisture, foreign material, milling yield, crop year, aroma or variety claim and testing method. USDA inspection distinguishes grade certification from factor-only analysis.

Export offer fields

A comparable export offer identifies product stage, grain type, origin, grade, broken percentage, crop year, packing or bulk basis, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, shipment window and inspection evidence. Atlas keeps dated reference contracts separate from physical export offers.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are rough rice and milled rice the same trade product?

No. Rough rice retains the hull; milling changes product weight, yield, quality measures and commercial use.

What does broken percentage mean in rice trade?

It states the share of kernels that are not whole under the applicable specification and test method. The basis must be attached to the grade and product stage.

How large is the CME Rough Rice contract?

CME's grain framework specifies 2,000 hundredweight, equal to 200,000 pounds.

Which fields make rice offers comparable?

Product stage, grain type or variety, grade, broken percentage, moisture, milling factors, crop year, origin, packing, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, shipment window and evidence date.
