Swine / Pork

Swine markets separate breeding stock, feeder pigs, slaughter hogs, carcasses and individual pork products. A comparable lot needs animal or product class, weight and carcass basis, quality specification, health and traceability evidence, origin, quantity, currency, delivery terms and timing.

This release uses USDA swine and carcass standards, Livestock Mandatory Reporting and the current CME Lean Hog contract. Contract and grade figures are reference definitions; they are not a live physical hog or delivered-pork price.

Animal and product class comes first

Breeding animals, feeder pigs and slaughter hogs are different commercial instruments. Live animals also differ from carcasses, primal cuts, trim, offal and processed pork. Atlas preserves class, sex, head count, live or carcass weight, health status, traceability, product form, origin and delivery terms instead of collapsing them into one generic swine market.

Grade language needs its exact standard and evidence

USDA publishes separate standards for slaughter swine and pork carcasses, including yield expectations for barrows and gilts. A transaction should name the applicable standard and inspection basis; Atlas does not infer an official grade or reuse a live-animal grade as if it described a carcass or retail cut.

Futures, reported cash trades and physical lots stay separate

CME Lean Hog futures use a 40,000-pound carcass-weight contract and cash settlement. USDA Livestock Mandatory Reporting publishes reported swine and wholesale-pork transaction information. Neither establishes the delivered value of an unspecified physical lot without class, weight and quality basis, location, quantity, currency, delivery terms, timing and evidence vintage.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are feeder pigs and slaughter hogs the same product?

No. They represent different production stages and need different weight, frame, muscle, health, location and delivery specifications.

How large is one CME Lean Hog futures contract?

The current CME contract specification states 40,000 pounds and quotes the contract in U.S. cents per pound.

Do USDA swine grades establish a live price?

No. The standards describe class, muscling, backfat and expected yield. Price comparison separately needs transaction basis, location, weight, quantity, currency, delivery timing and evidence date.

Which fields make physical swine or pork offers comparable?

Animal or product class, sex where relevant, live or carcass weight, quality and yield specification, health and traceability evidence, origin and delivery location, quantity, currency, delivery terms, timing and evidence vintage.
