Crab

Crab is a trade family, not one interchangeable commodity. A comparable lot must identify the species and accepted market name, wild or cultured production, live, whole, section, cooked, frozen, picked or pasteurized form, size and shell condition, origin and harvest area, pack and glazing, cold-chain record, quantity and delivery terms.

The figures below are dated FDA identification coverage and NOAA 2024 Alaska king-crab landings, not current global production, a lot analysis, an offer or a live physical price. Physical value is withheld without a current species-specific lot, origin, quality, rights-cleared market and logistics evidence.

Species and product form come before comparison

FDA lists distinct acceptable market names and scientific identities across blue, snow, king, Dungeness and other crabs. Callinectes sapidus is Blue Crab, while Chionoecetes opilio is Snow Crab. A generic 'crab' record cannot carry one species' identity, fishery, size basis or commercial specification into another.

Live, whole, cooked and picked crab are separate products

Live crab, whole raw or cooked crab, clusters or sections, frozen meat, picked meat and pasteurized crabmeat have different yield, handling, packaging, shelf-life and food-safety evidence. Atlas keeps species, production method, process state, pack, net and drained weight, glazing, temperature history and lot code attached to the product record.

Fishery and harvest evidence belongs to its stock and season

NOAA describes separate Alaska red king-crab stocks and management by size, sex and season, while Alaska snow crab has its own species identity, stock evidence and harvest timing. Origin must therefore include the harvest area and date, wild or cultured status, gear or production method where material, legal harvest evidence and the authority or certification behind each claim.

Dated landings are not a physical price

NOAA's 2024 Alaska king-crab landings and value describe a dated fishery aggregate across king crab; they do not establish current availability or value for a named crab product. A physical comparison needs species, product form, size and shell condition, origin and harvest area, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, cold-chain and inspection evidence.

Questions procurement teams ask

Is crab one interchangeable trade commodity?

No. Blue, snow, Tanner, king, Dungeness and other crabs are separate species or commercial identities. Species, accepted market name, origin and product form must remain explicit.

Are live crab and pasteurized crabmeat comparable products?

No. They differ in process state, yield, packaging, cold-chain and food-safety controls. They require separate product records and specifications.

What did NOAA report for Alaska king crab in 2024?

NOAA reports 8 million pounds of commercial Alaska king-crab landings valued at $96 million in 2024. That dated aggregate is not a current lot price or global production figure.

Which fields make crab offers comparable?

Species and market name, wild or cultured method, live, whole, section or meat form, raw, cooked, frozen or pasteurized state, size and shell condition, origin and harvest area, pack and glazing, net weight, cold chain, lot and inspection evidence, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window and evidence date.
