Sunflower Meal

Sunflower meal is a feed material remaining after oil extraction from sunflower seed, and commercial identities differ by extraction process, dehulling, protein, fibre, moisture and residual oil. A comparable lot needs the exact meal or expeller form, processing and heat-treatment history, declared analysis, origin, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination and delivery window.

This release uses USDA's September 2026 world oilseeds report and the EU Catalogue of feed materials. USDA's 2026/27 production, trade and consumption projections are dated market context; catalogue thresholds define named feed-material fractions. Neither source is a live physical quote.

Meal, expeller, dehulled fractions and seed are separate products

Sunflower meal is produced after oil extraction; expeller material reflects mechanical pressing, while extracted meal can reflect solvent extraction and appropriate heat treatment. Dehulling and later fractionation can materially change protein and fibre. Sunflower seed, oil, hulls, meal and high-protein or high-cellulose fractions therefore remain separate Atlas identities rather than one interchangeable sunflower product.

Protein and fibre claims need a declared basis

The EU Catalogue of feed materials identifies a high-protein, low-cellulose fraction from ground and fractionated dehulled sunflower meal with at least 45% crude protein and at most 8% crude fibre on an 8% moisture basis. It separately identifies a high-cellulose fraction with at least 38% crude fibre and 17% crude protein on the stated moisture bases. A contract should name the product entry or equivalent specification, analytical methods, moisture basis, crude protein, crude fibre, residual oil or fat, ash and any process conditions rather than relying on the word meal alone.

The September 2026 balance stays tied to its vintage

USDA's September 2026 report projects 2026/27 world sunflowerseed meal production at 25.17 million metric tons, exports at 10.40 million and domestic consumption at 23.81 million. Its August-to-September projection changed production from 24.83 to 25.17 million metric tons and exports from 10.25 to 10.40 million, illustrating why Atlas preserves the report month and marketing year with every balance-sheet figure.

A world balance is not a delivered feed price

Production, export and consumption projections describe market scale and direction; they do not establish a tradable delivered value. A physical sunflower meal price still needs the exact meal or expeller form, protein and fibre basis, moisture, residual oil, quality and safety evidence, origin, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery window, logistics and information vintage. Atlas does not convert the world balance or a sunflower oil benchmark into a live meal quote.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are sunflower meal and sunflower seed the same product?

No. Meal is a feed material produced after oil extraction from seed; the two products have different specifications, units, uses and trade terms.

Are expeller and extracted sunflower meal interchangeable?

No. Their processing routes and residual oil can differ, and dehulling, heat treatment and fractionation can also change protein, fibre and quality characteristics.

What defines the EU high-protein, low-cellulose sunflower meal fraction?

Catalogue entry 2.19.8 describes a fraction from dehulled sunflower meal with at least 45% crude protein and at most 8% crude fibre on an 8% moisture basis.

Does USDA's 25.17-million-ton projection establish a sunflower meal price?

No. It is a September 2026 world production projection for 2026/27. A physical price additionally needs a defined meal specification, analytical basis, origin, quantity, currency, Incoterm, destination, delivery timing, logistics and current permitted evidence.
